Grease is a musical set in 1958 that follows the love story between Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrosky. After a summer romance, they meet again at Rydell High School, but Danny acts differently in front of his T-Birds friends to maintain his tough-guy persona, while a disappointed Sandy joins the clique Pink Ladies, where she will clash with their leader Rizzo and struggle to fit in.
As the year goes by, Danny and Sandy try to rekindle their relationship, facing multiple misunderstandings along the way as well as the meddling of their friends. The plot focuses on themes such as the desire to fit in, peer pressure and the search for identity. With unforgettable songs and a retro style, Grease has become a musical theater classic, recognized by many as the quintessential “feel good musical”.
Grease premiered in 1971 in Chicago, initially as a raw, gritty, and more provocative play than its later versions. Due to its rapid success, the play moved to Broadway in 1972, where it underwent significant changes, including the addition of new songs and the refinement of characters and the plot. The musical soon became one of Broadway's biggest shows with more than 3,300 performances, a record it held for nearly a decade.
In 1978 the play was also adapted into a film starring John Travolta as Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson. The film version broke all box office records and took the Grease phenomenon around the world. It also added new songs such as “Grease” and “You're the One That I Want,” which were later added to the show.
The first Australian production of the musical took place in 1972 in Melbourne, and just like in the rest of the world, it quickly became a hit among the Australian audience. Since then, the show has travelled to multiple cities and regional areas across the country, and it is still one of the fan favourites.
