The Tony Award-Winning musical Parade is coming to Australia brought by Soundworks Productions
Written by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry and with musicby Jason Robert Brown, Parade has become one of the most popular musicals in the 21st century thanks to its moving story of injustice and social struggle. With Aaron Robuck playing the role of Leo Frank and Montana Sharp portraying his courageous wife Lucille, the show will tell the true story of the unfair prosecution Leo was subjected to, showing the importance of human resilience and the fight for human rights, while surprising the audience with brilliant music numbers.
Brave and innovative, Parade will leave no one indifferent. Don't miss it!
Set in the early 20th century in Atlanta, Parade tells the heart-wrenching, true story of Leo Frank, a Jew citizen who was unfairly put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan. Even before the trial begins, Frank is guilty in the eyes of everyone in town, and a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal his fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and his dear wife Lucille, who finds the strength and love to become his greatest support.
The show delves into the social and political tensions of the time, including issues of racism, anti-Semitism, and the power dynamics between the North and South of the United States. It also explores the relationship between Leo Frank and his wife, Lucille, who tirelessly fights for his freedom. A powerful exploration of injustice and the importance of not forgetting history so as not to repeat it.
Parade originally premiered on Broadway in 1998 under the direction of Harold Prince and starring Brent Carver. Despite positive reviews and a good reception from the audience, the show had problems at the box office and had to leave New York. However, it regained popularity thanks to a national tour that took it to major cities in the United States, which led to two Tony Awards in 1999, including Best Original Score.
Since its premiere, Parade has been performed by theatres around the world, including prominent productions in London's West End and several regional theatres in the United States. Its lasting legacy lies in its moving depiction of a real historical event and its exploration of timeless themes that continue to be important nowadays. After a few years on the sidelines during the last decade, the musical returned to Broadway in 2023, and following its success, it is coming to Australia for the first time.
During this year, Parade will visit the following cities:
