Replacing the Waverly Park stadium, the Marvel Stadium was announced on the 31st October 1996 and the stadium construction began in 1997. It was built in the Melbourne Docklands to the West of the CBD which is in one of the most industrial areas of Sydney. Originally, the stadium was developed by the Docklands Stadium Consortium. Like the Waverly Park Stadium, the major first purpose of the stadium was for Australian Rules Football. Construction of the building began only weeks before the first match, so some of the building process had to be delayed.
In March 2010, the stadium was damaged by a thunderstorm during the 2010 Victorian storms and the external roof of Gate 2 caved in. In 2015, LED electronic advertising was built around the front panels around level 1 and level 2. Works for refurbishment of the Marvel Statements are set to start in 2021 and end in 2023.
