Lake Street Dive is a renowned formation whose eclectic blend of pop-soul, indie pop, folk rock, and jazz influences has earned them a dedicated following.
The band was formed in 2004 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston by Rachael Price (lead vocals), Mike "McDuck" Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget Kearney (bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums), later joined by Akie Bermiss (keyboards). Their ability to fuse vintage soul with modern indie-pop sensibilities was already seen with their 2014 album Bad Self Portraits, which featured the dynamic track You Go Down Smooth.
Then, they reached the No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart with their 2016 album Side Pony, which helped in solidifying their place in the rock scene. This way, other tracks like Call Off Your Dogs, Good Kisser (2018) and Hypotheticals (2021) became fan favourites, delivering more music that spoke to their themes of love, heartbreak, self-empowerment, and societal reflection.
This way, their ability to blend genres with Price’s powerhouse vocals, jazz-inflected arrangements, and tight harmonies has set them apart from other bands since the beggining, making them hard to categorize into one genre. Their talent has been praised for their multiple live performances during their career, appearing in the famous Tiny Desk Concert show.
