New Order is an English rock band whose music presence skyrocketed in the 1980's. Formed by vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, and drummer Stephen Morris, New Order came about as a way to regroup the remains of the band Joy Division after the tragic loss of Ian Curtis.
Pioneers in blending post-punk with electronic and dance music, New Order became an 80's staple with a distinctive sound that has influenced music artists throughout the years. Their iconic discography includes albums such as Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), which shifted from their post-punk roots into an electronic and dance music sound. The album, which featured the hit Blue Monday, became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.
Their songwriting delves into themes of love, loss, and existential contemplation, which complement their musical journey from post-punk to a synth-pop. The band holds a close connection to the independent record label Factory Records and its nightclub, The Haçienda, which meant a great influence of dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation into their new found music style.
As one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s, their early and new albums continue to inspire countless artists around the globe.
