Home to over 1,200 butterflies, including the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is a colourful, vibrant day out and takes the title as the largest butterfly aviary and exhibits in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere!

Learn about these incredible, other-worldly creatures and their fascinating habits and lives through the sanctuary's array of unique butterfly experiences. Located in the centre of Kundra, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is an ideal family day out!  

Experiences

Main Aviary

Replicating a lush, green, rainforest landscape, the main aviary features an under-storey and canopy along with waterfalls, streams which create a natural and rainforest feeling setting. The Main Aviary is designed to home the world’s most nervous butterfly, the Ulysses.  

Food Plant Walk

An educational alk is a 20 minute, inspiring walk which tells you all about how the sanctuary feeds its many butterflies and their fascinating, unique eating habits!  

Butterflies Myths and Legends

As curious creatures which have been around for over 200 million years, butterflies have endless secrets, myths and legends which you can discover right here at the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary!  

Egg Laying Area

To constantly reproduce butterflies on the premises, the laboratory collects eggs daily so they can then ‘hand-raise’ them so they can later be released into the sanctuary. An essential and fascinating part of their metamorphosis process, the Egg Laying Area is a must-see!

Host Plants

Boasting over three acres of land on site, learning about how the Host Plants provide for the caterpillars is an integral part of butterflies' journey and integral to the experience.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is open to the public every day from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

The Sanctuary is closed on Christmas Day.

How to Get There

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is located at 8 Rob Veivers Drive, in the heart of Kuranda Village, where you can arrive by:

  • Shuttle Bus: there is a free shuttle bus service which operates from the Kuranda Sky Terminal and the Kuranda Scenic Railway Station to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.  
  • Car: drive into the centre of Kuranda Village, which is about 40 minutes from Cairns. You can then take the Free Shuttle Bus.
